When Llucid entered the woods they did so out of desperation. They'd heard the tales as everyone had. Behind the tree line lie a strange place, disconnected from reality as it was known. There were horror stories of terrors beyond imagine, horrible creatures and curses lurking behind every twist of the wood, but within those were the rare tales of something great. A young kalon had found a plant capable of curing her of a disease deadly to all who contracted it. Another had found a stream whose song eased his ailing mind before leading him back to a town that found him a changed, and infinitely more joyful man.
So Llucid had gone. Away from a life that had simply lost all meaning. They wondered into the wood with nothing to leave behind, and a hope they could find something worth caring for. What they'd initially found was madness. There were trees that sang in grating shrieks when you brushed against their bark, flowers that dripped blood that smelled as sweet as honey, and rocks that made you nauseous to look at. It was all so strange, so horrible, but they'd been wandering well over a week and found nothing good of it all. Llucid had begun to wonder if it was simply insanity that had helped people, or the sheer joy of finding a way out of here. They'd been broken by the time they reached the stream, beaten by the woods. The stream had been a blessing, clear, and normal in a place where nothing made sense. After getting a drink Llucid had spent some time simply looking at their reflection. The only good thing they'd found here had been a flower that seemed to make their back feel better, and their own back was perfectly fine as it was. Starring into their own reflection, though, Llucid had a thought. The back-ache flower was useless... to them. It would be a godsend for some other people, a beacon of hope in the darkness. So Llucid had set forth with a different goal in mind. Systematically they took the time to find out what each end every thing did as best they could. Eventually small things they'd overlooked emerged. A frog whose skin secretions healed cuts in seconds, a tree whose fruit improved ones vision despite its bitter taste. These things had no use for Llucid, but when they finally mapped the land well enough to find their way out they had gifts to share. They'd become known as a witch in town. A kind, but strange soul with the power to cure ailments, and strengthen the body and mind. Each trip into the wood brought back new discoveries, and soon people came from far and wide to seek the one who could walk the winding woods and extract it's powers. The other kalon had been thankful, and returned the favors where they could. Home-cooked meals, and beautiful fabrics, and pretty smelling perfumes all arrived with notes of thanks, and many customers would make a point to stop by and just say hello. It was still a lonely existence, yes, but Llucid had found a place in the little shop they'd set up on the edge of town. They got to hear so many stories, see children who otherwise wouldn't have made it grow strong and healthy, watch the people they cared for, and who came to care for them thrive. They'd found their something worth caring for.
